Stating The Obvious
Why is the hardest level of MGS 4 so... HARD?! Granted, it's still not the insanity that is the "Dante Must Die" mode of Devil May Cry 4, but the precision you need to get through this game without killing anyone, without being seen and without resorting to healing items is craaaaaaaaaaazy. Belated Spidey Thoughts
FINALLY got around to watching Spiderman 3 after picking up the Blu-Ray a few days ago. A little disappointing, really. Had some truly entertaining moments, but I think Raimi ultimately failed in his attempt to prove Schumacher wrong about the idea of three villains not working in a movie. He too couldn't make it work, and this really should have been two films. I also felt that there were too many forced plot points created simply for the sake of conflict rather than logical developments of the characters as we'd come to know them, but oh well... Starting The Big Run
It's time to get the Big Boss emblem in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Not a task for the faint of heart; play the hardest difficulty level in less than 5 hours, don't use healing items, don't kill anyone (you can knock them out with a tranq gun or stun grenade) and don't get seen by any enemies. Fortunately, you can save in between rounds, something that a similar task on the original Metal Gear Solid wouldn't even allow you to do without disqualifying yourself. Monday Of No Real Note
Did laundry, played games. Condemned 2: Bloodshot was finished, and it was a bit disappointing. A perfectly fine game was ruined by a bizarre tangent in the plot that suddenly had you doing incredibly dumb things that bore no consistency with the earlier part of the game. Or the first game for that matter. If you work that hard to try and have a dark, gritty, 7-ish or Silence of the Lambs-y style serial killer investigation game with some supernatural elements, then why suddenly take a left turn into comics-ville and turn your hero into Black Canary? Saturday On The Streets
What started out just being a run for a carton of milk ended up being a pleasant afternoon on Bloor, a chance to finally try out a Fish n' Chips place we'd been trying to eat at for over a year, a visit to the art store for the Wife's supplies, a talk with one of her gallery curator friends, and a trip to the Evil Bookstore where I once again found stuff I couldn't resist like a copy of Eternals by Neil-O, and Spiderman 3 on Blu-Ray for less than $20. Desperation Games
The Wife has been getting the twitches somethin' awful ever since playing the hell out of the Civilization: Revolution demo and checking the calendar every half hour to see if it's July 8th yet. In order to try and kill some of that time and make the days go by faster, she was more than willing to indulge my list of "games I've been meaning to pick up one of these days but aren't real high on the priority list," and a trip down to Eaton Center meant I came home with these goodies. Since the heavy hitters in the horror genre of gaming aren't out on the PS3 yet (by that I mean Silent Hill, Resident Evil or Siren) this is just about the only thing I can pick up that spits out graphics in High-Def. I'd played the first on the Xbox 360, and while it lacked the same super-creep out factor of a Japanese horror game, it still provided some jumps and thrills. The second is more of the same, crawling around with a pipe in hand while hobos and other homeless types try to kill you.One of the things I like about this game is the CSI style element that's been built in. It's obviously not the chief component (and now that I think about it, that's a darn shame, because the interactivity of games is perfect for a detective-work style game) but it allows you to do cool stuff like visit crime scenes, run a UV light on the ground for blood samples, take murder victim photos, and try to deduce methods of death, where you'll get rated on your accuracy. It's a nice little break from all the super-natural, psychotically enraged, hobo attacks you have to fend off with a bat, pipe or any other handy melee implement you can find. This, on the other hand, is by Atlus, meaning we were pretty much guaranteed to get it at some point since the Wife has turned into a total Atlus fangirl.It's not the kind of game that would go over very well these days because it's in 2D instead of the "traditional" polygons that have been a mainstay of graphical presentation since the mid-90's, but it's got some amazingly detailed artwork, and actually plays pretty well for those of us that still remember a time before games came in 5.1 surround sound and juggled a million, buzillion particles in real time on the screen. Yay For Anime
A belated birthday present arrived in the mail today. Appleseed: Ex Machina which is, in the immortal words of Ron Moore, a "re-imagining" of the original Appleseed manga that was created by Masamune Shirow in the 80's. It's got a shiny, CG sheen to it, which is really the only way the action of the series could be portrayed without killing animators. Not as thematically complex as what Shirow originally did, but the John Woo production values are abundant, and the plot itself feels about on par with the average videogame.Labels: Anime Wednesday, June 18, 2008

Back To A Classic
Taking a break from MGS 4, because the repeat playthroughs will get pretty elaborate--as they ALWAYS do, with an MGS game. Instead I'm returning to a giant classic in PC gaming, coming in the form of The Orange Box, which I got in the mail the same day as MGS 4 arrived. It's got Half-Life 2, Episode 1 and 2, the expansions, Portal and Team Fortress 2. Five games for significantly less than the price one, that's pretty hard to beat for bargains. I'd actually played the original HL 2 on my wreck of a PC years ago, so this is the first time I've seen it looking this good. Portal is also shaping up to be a work of genius. It's quite an original FPS PUZZLE game of all things, and it's sense of humor is absolutely wicked. Unfortunately, Electronic Arts did an incredibly shoddy port of the games, so while they look good, the frame rate can chug, which is pretty unacceptable for a games this old on a system this powerful. Wow
In almost total seriousness (because the game seems to be 50% game, 50% cutscene) that may be the best action movie I've played in years. I couldn't stop and the game is done. Now it's time for the leisurely second playthrough to collect bonus items and such... But don't take my word for it, here's the review of the game from IGN. Pizza & Apocalypse
A surprise invite to have home made pizza with the neighbors left us so stuffed to the gills with food that it was pretty much impossible to do anything else except sit back and watch our Blu-Ray version of The Road Warrior. I think that perhaps I am starting to rebel against CG in movies, which is saddening to me since CGI made so happy the first time I saw Jurassic Park. Now, however, watching The Road Warrior and seeing real guys jumping from real cars to real trucks with a real lack of safety harnesses that haven't been digitally erased, the movie looks far more impressive to me precisely BECAUSE of its primitiveness compared to CG. Every single shot is real. Even the super impressive panoramic shot of cars circling the refinery over a gorgeous Australian sunset, the whole thing actually happened, not a single digital effect thrown in to make it look epic, it really was just that epic. The Monthly Ritual
Yup, back to GameAxis articles for the next issue. And watching the Wife begin a slow but truly frightening mastery of the nuances of resource management in Civilization: Revolution. I don't think I've ever seen her in this much anticipation of a game. She's alternately flipping between getting the PC version to tide her over until next month, or importing the UK version because for some reason, Europe gets the title a month before North America. Hot Sundays
Aside from writing up the article and swapping turns of the Civilization: Revolution demo (yes, we are playing a demo over and over again. We are pathetic), the only thing of note is that this year we can actually sleep comfortably at night thanks to the new portable air conditioner sitting in the bedroom. Little did I realize when we arrived in Toronto that the heat and humidity here during summer were only a few degrees less intolerable than Singapore throughout the year, so as stupid as it may seem to someone from the ol' hometown, in Toronto, I definitely see the advantage in having an air conditioner in the house. Spring Is Dead
And summer is officially here. The first day where the temperature broke 30 degrees... Man, suddenly it's like being in Singapore again, except that there are white people everywhere and not all of them are business executives. I was quite surprised by the amount of content available in the Playstation Store yesterday. A ton of interesting stuff was available including a demo for Civilization: Revolution. I hadn't touched this game in years because... well, it's evil and sucks hours and hours of your life. Unfortunately the Wife had never played it and despite my warnings about the Seductive Evils of this game she gave it a try. Then I gave it a try. Then we gave it a try... The End Is In Sight
For a while there I'd hit a brick wall in Gran Turismo 5: Prologue. Having gotten to the final, fastest, most realistic and most punishing set of races, known as "S-Class" I was getting regularly creamed on the two most difficult courses. However, sheer stubbornness has paid off once again, and I managed to clear both races. Escher With A Joystick
The Wife was dubious about my choice of purchasing this new game off the Playstation Store, but, as with so many things about gaming, her doubt quickly turned into obsession and she now has a new game she utterly hates with a passion but can't stop playing. echochrome is an elegant little puzzle game that's perfect after dinner. It's inspired largely by the confusing illustrations of M. C. Escher, in that the visuals resemble simple geometric shapes that can't actually exist in reality. The premise of the game is that players rotate the camera so that whatever they "see" becomes reality. In other words, if you want to walk over a hole, simply block that hole by rotating the camera so its obstructed from view, and it ceases to exist. If you want to fall down to a lower level that's some distance away, rotate the camera so that level you're on and the level you wish to fall to appear to be one on top of the other and when you fall down the hole, you'll land on that level. It's a difficult concept to grasp at first, you really need to see it in action to get it. The Wife has gone bonkers over the game and is now toying with its level creator option to make her own confusing puzzles. Here's a trailer to better get the point across. The Problem With Online Play
The Wife has gotten back into Rock Band and once again we're cruising the internet looking for other players when our favorite regulars aren't available. Things have changed over the last few months. It's not that it's hard to find other players, quite the contrary. It's not even hard to find other good players willing to rock out on Expert. The problem now seems to be DLC or downloadable content. There are tons of fun songs that we've accumulated, but unless the other players have them, you can't play them online. We're having a difficult time finding other random players with decent collections of the DLC, and it gets mighty boring being stuck with the same original 58 songs you've heard a million, buzillion times when you know you've got More Than a Feeling just sitting there waiting for The Full Band Experience.
