That Icky Stage Of Writing
You ever get to the point where you're working on something for so long and thinking about it so much that it starts to resemble a Rubik's Cube in your head? Y'know, how you keep twisting it and turning it but you're really not sure if you're getting any closer to finishing it and it still looks like a buncha' random colors splorged all over your cube? Yeah, that's where I am now with my latest script rewrite. Part of my brain is saying "Yeah, that's all right. It's working. Kind'a." The other part is saying "I just can't tell anymore..." Oh well, that's what third and fourth drafts are for. Sigh... Labels: Writing Saturday, March 19, 2005
Road Trip!
Whoo! So things have been busy, most of which I can't talk about (NDA Police tend to cruise the neighborhood and stare meaningfully up at my window while I work...) but I can say that things--in spastic fits and starts--are moving ahead on the project which said NDA police are protecting. In a couple of hours I'll be headed down to the airport--with fiance in tow--for Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia. While I have been to Malaysia before, I have never actually been to KL, though I think I'm numbed out from too much time in metropolia; after a while all South East Asian cosmopolitan centers tend to blur into a collection of Starbucks outlets, shopping malls, air conditioned movie theaters and many, many McDonald's burgers. I can't KL breaking that pattern. The reason we're headed down is to talk to a few people and possibly do some location scouting. It seems like Malaysia is making more and more sense as a place to move the Base Of Operations so depending on how things go, there is a chance that a move may be in the offing for me, my fiance and our two cats. She has no problem with this since A) She's had quite enough of Singapore, thank you very much (Not like I haven't...) and B) She got shanghied into this project as well and now has the unenviable task of pushing me around and asking, "Is it done yet? Did you get what you wanted out of the artists? Is it done yet? You want to change WHAT?!? IS IT DONE YET?!?" Concepts Are COOL In another moment of geek ecstasy we sat down and had a good, long talk with the fellow that will most likely be our man for all our foreseeable concept artwork. He is enormously talented and I'm really digging his style in a big way; all tech and shiny and the kind of thing I could never in a million years afford. It was very gratifying to just throw around idea about possible art directions and talk at length about characters, environments, moods, lighting and just see everyone's lights go on in their heads and realize we were all on the same vibe. That doesn't happen often, so when I'm privy to one of those moments, it makes me remember those lazy conversations with other geeks about all kinds of crazy ideas, only now we're at the "professional level" and there's actually money being thrown around to realize this breezy brainstorming. I think that, for me, is the single biggest kick about this job. For years I've had ideas come in and out of the rotating doors through my imagination, but this time out, we're going to put people together who will sit down and try to bring it all to life with voice and image and music and big explosions. Lots of 'em. But first we've got to get through these initial stages. Like nailing down the concepts--which I seen no difficulties with--and then setting everything up so the long marathon bringing it to life can begin. At some point I'm thinking that eventually all this will start making itself known on our own website, which still needs to debut, and when it does, I'll finally be able to start discussing more details and maybe even take in some input from anyone that still bothers to read this...
